The Train Ride by June Crebbin
What a fantastic half term we have had - dinosaurs and pirates has made for a very exciting 6 weeks and although it feels like 2 minutes since I joined the Reception gang - I'm feeling my age tonight and looking forward to a few lie-ins before our next adventure begins!
Next term we are looking at two different themes again - Growing (plants - not chicks!) and Journeys. We will be exploring this theme by sharing stories and looking at some real-life contrasting UK localities. We will begin our work by looking at the fabulous June Crebbin's 'The Train Ride'. Our literacy focus is in reading this together fluently, and being able to order the story... Get a head start by looking at a BBC retelling here:-

24th May 2010
Dear Mrs Bailey, Mrs Steel and the Reception children,
I am writing to you to ask for your help in designing a new range of Essential Pirate Clothing for our male and female pirates. The new range needs to be warm enough to keep us toasty on the high seas and during chilly evening watches, but also cool enough for when the weather is hot and sunny and waterproof for when it rains!
I am sending you some photographs of the current ‘Pirate range’ which I think you will agree is looking a bit old fashioned. I understand from Mr Wilson that Robin Hood school is full of creative people so I hope you are just the people for the job!
Please draw your designs on a sheet of A4 white paper; I need your designs to be clearly labelled with a name and an explanation of what type/colour of material you would recommend for each item of clothing. Please write back to me as soon as possible enclosing your finished designs.
Thank you
Mr J Flagpole.

Treasure!
The other children had a rummage through the treasure haul too -
That's valuable because it's shiny and the necklace is real silver, but that lid isn't (Billy)
Oh some playdough but that's not valuable, but this diamond button thing is. Diamonds are really valuable (Emily)
A keyring that's sparkly and I've found some real money (Charlotte)
A bracelet that could be for little girls. A staple isn't treasure but an earring, that's real treasure! (Emily)
This is precious, you can put your keys on. The necklace is gold (Jodi)

Message to Captain Jack from Reception
we are really sorry to hear that you had two lots of bad news; not only did Patch have that terrible accident but for all the treasure to be stolen by that rascal Wild Eyed Pete as well......
We have completed the wanted posters to circulate his description and have taken care of the birthday cards for your mum. Have a safe trip home and we will speak to you soon.
Reception x
ps Jacob and Louis suggest that next time you leave a crew member on board ship to guard the treasure!
Update from Captain Jack - bad news!
I would also appreciate it if you would drop my mum a line. It is her birthday, so will you send her a card or two from me, and make sure she knows I am OK... Speak soon, J X

Dear Captain Jack
It's very cold and you wear a lot of clothes. There are penguins and ice....(Freya)
It's cold and there are polar bears and penguins. They slide on their tummies. You wear warm clothes. (Louis - who also told me that the coats have feathers in them to keep people warm)
There's a penguin and the boats can crash in that ice. The ice that's blocked up the (glacier) stops it from being warm enough for koala bears (Joseph)
There are penguins who slide on the ice. If it's freezing the ice stays, but if it gets hot it would melt. There are no houses, well there are at the red bit (South Pole) I know somebody in year 4 who's grandma lives in the south pole land (Jacob)
It's very cold and icy with no cafes to get food or drink from. There's no houses but there are penguins and polar bears. Oh and sharks (Sophie)
You could die there because there are no shops for food or water. And they don't have many houses. There are penguins and polar bears, it's too hot and rainy here for polar bears and they definitely don't like thunder (Jessica)
Todays update from Captain Jack - he's made it to Antarctica - but still received no messages!
We were back on board by 4pm and sailing towards warmer climates again - thank goodness. We're heading to Australia as I type - I'm thinking we should be there by early morning if we sail at full throttle throughout the night. I'm looking forward to seeing Australia - The Kid tells me there are kangaroos there so looking forward to seeing them! I'm a bit worried I've had no messages or questions back from you - are you getting my messages alright? See you soon, J X

Today's message from Captain Jack (he's got to Senegal)
We have had a bout of sickness on board these past 24 hours, with half my 24 man crew going down with the most terrible stomach trouble known to man! I wasn't one of them, luckily, but those of us who weren't sick have had to work double shifts to keep 'The Jolly Podger' afloat. We were glad to dock in Senegal early this morning...
After many hours following our map we filled our sacks with gold and silver, just as we had hoped. It was swelteringly hot as we made our way back to shore and we were glad to get back in our bunks safe and sound for a well earned rest. Most of us were just dropping off when Old Redbeard raised the alarm from the look-out post. He says he saw Wild Eyed Pete's ship - 'This 'Orrible Lot' - across the ocean and we spent the rest of the day on high alert, waiting for his attack.
So far there is no sign of him and nothing has happened, but we will be on high alert through the night tonight, just in case.
The treasure hunting is going really well this trip, and we're looking forward to our next stop - Antarctica - because The Kid has been there before and says it is piled high with jewels the size of footballs! We're heading there now.
No questions for me, yet? Ask me anything - don't be shy!
Until tomorrow,
J X
P.S. Photos of Senegal attached - have you been?

Captain Jack's message about his adventures so far - read it here!
And YO HO HO to all you others sat there listening to this...
Let me introduce myself... I'm Pirate Jack - Mr Blackbeard to you lot - and me and my crew have been together for many a year.
We left to look for treasure in the dead of night last Thursday, and have been sailing day and night for 4 nights already. There was a terrible storm over the weekend but we are OK. We dropped our anchor this morning and headed for the land of Spain... After several hours exploring, we came across what we think is very valuable treasure. We are keeping it all hidden, in case Wild Eyed Pete finds us again and steals all we find..(BEWARE!)
Anyhow, we have eaten and drunk and are now back on board. We've decided to sail further South to see what we can find in Africa. Will send word tomorrow, if I am able. If you have any questions for me, send them on. I get a bit bored nowadays floating on the ocean waves...
Love from,
Blackbeard
XXXX
P.S. Have sent some photos of the places we have seen - do you know Spain, at all? Nice place.

This week's newsletter...well done to our Superstars Rebecca Musson and Jessica Richardson!
NEWS ROUND-UP
The Pirates have landed in Reception – along with some fabulous dressing up clothes: hats, cutlasses, eye patches and sparkly dresses for our damsels in distress! The children have taken part in a treasure hunt using their reading skills to read and follow clues and are showing as much enthusiasm for pirates as they did dinosaurs!BLOGSPOT
We know that we have one follower already for our Reception blog – thank you! Please join them... We are adding to it on a regular basis, so please do have a look at what your child has been up to this week. http://robinhoodfoundationstage.blogspot.com/.
Numeracy this week:
We have looked at symmetry and the children have learned that a line of symmetry divides something into two halves so that both sides look the same. Thank you for looking at symmetry with your children over the weekend - they were able to explain their ideas well. We have been developing our ICT skills making symmetrical patterns using the Softease programme.
Next week:
We will be starting to look at measuring length, comparing height directly to identify the tallest/longest and the shortest. We will then be using non standard measures – e.g. strides, hands, lengths of string – before beginning to compare lengths/ heights of two or more objects using a ruler.
Help us by:-
A family investigation…
Find out who is the tallest and who is the shortest member of your family – you can include grandma, granddad, aunts and uncles too – whomever you can find!
Literacy this week:
We have created our own treasure maps complete with authentic tea staining! The children have drawn their map using a key, thinking carefully about the perilous areas which might surround (and protect) the treasure! This week, we have learned how to use the stapler to help us make a booklet and developed our scissor skills in creating the flaps for lifting..
Next week:
We will be receiving a variety of messages from our friend Pirate Jack as he travels around the world. The children will be locating his destination on a map and developing our geographical awareness as we look at the landscapes, climate and animals in each place. We will be following his journey on a daily basis and replying to his messages.
Help us by:-
Continuing to read at home – 3 or 4 times a week really does impact very quickly on your child’s reading.
Topic this week:
As you can see on the blog, the children have been painting their own pirate characters. Mrs Friar has helped the children create a fabulous tropical treasure island using mod roc. Finally, the children have designed and made their own boats out of box modelling materials with the additional challenges of choosing waterproof materials and making a boat that will float!
Next week:
We will be using charcoal and chalks to draw our pirate ships. The children will make comparisons about the different places Captain Jack travels to using photographs to develop their ideas and think about the type of weather and clothing that would be most suitable for each place.
Help us by:-
Either have a look at a real-life map of some kind – shopping centre, theme park, road or world map, asking them to tell you what they can see on the map OR draw a map of your street or a room in your house etc.
Our handwriting is a key area for improvement this half term, so your support with that at home would be very much appreciated. This week we will be consolidating our practise of the ‘curly caterpillar’ letters [c o a d g] and will begin to look at the ‘long ladders’ [l i t u j h]. All of these letters MUST start at the top… Please encourage your children to write these letters for you at home and insist they do so correctly. Practise ‘little and often’ really works with this small but important aspect of writing.
If your child will not write at home, please encourage drawing, colouring, cutting out, gluing etc – it all improves muscle control in the hands and handwriting in the long run… If you would like more advice, please let us know. Thanks for you support.
•BOX MODELLING – is a big focus this half term. Thank you for all your boxes, cartons and newspaper so far……please continue to send them in...
•PARENTS/CARERS – All children are asked to change their books during school time on a weekly basis. Please feel free to come back into class to change books more frequently should you wish to do so.

NEWS ROUND-UP
This week we have rounded off our Dinosaur topic by sharing our research about extinction. We have developed our ICT skills by opening, minimising and watching video clips which have sparked off discussions and debates about the different theories! We have been keeping an eye on our eggs in the incubator; we are all waiting for the emergence of the chicks…. A big thank you to Mr Reynolds for taking care of them over the bank holiday weekend.
BLOGSPOT
We hope you had chance to look at our new Reception blog. This is a fantastic way for us to share information and our experiences with you. You can access it at http://robinhoodfoundationstage.blogspot.com/. Please do!
Numeracy this week:
We have focused on 3D shapes (cone, pyramid, cuboid, cube, sphere and cylinder) using mathematical language to describe the shapes, talking about corners, faces, sides. We have also made our own 3D shapes from play dough and made box models with a variety of different shapes.
Literacy this week:
We have created a movie about the extinction of the dinosaurs which we are keen to share with you – tune into the blogspot to hear it. We have also been reading and writing silly sentences, just to make us laugh.. your children are very funny and had plenty of fabulous ideas – some posted on the blog… Post some comments and let us know what you think!
Topic this week:
We have found the best ways to ‘rescue’ our dinosaurs from blocks of ice – the children found very insightful ways to melt the ice quickly, including using the sunshine, pouring on warm water and breaking into smaller pieces (aka smashing!) We have also made our own dinosaur puppets, working out how to make a body part move using split pins. Scissor skills will be an ongoing focus.
Next week in Numeracy:
We will be printing with our 3D shapes, looking for similarities between these and 2D shapes and talking about these. We will also start looking a symmetry- looking at flat shapes to see how we can divide them to make each side a mirror image of each other.
Help us by keeping up the counting work – find opportunities to count, to add and take away practically.. Basing a 5 minute ‘mental maths workout’ around a packet of sweets (or raisins!) makes it interesting…
Next week in Literacy
We will be developing our understanding of pirates by looking at some notorious fictional characters and role playing some pirate adventures. We will be drawing and labelling our own pirate island map, and reading clues to find hidden treasures in and around school…
Help us by continuing to read at home – 3 or 4 times a week really does impact very quickly on your child’s reading.
Next week in Topic
The Pirates will land in Reception!
Highlights will include making our own pirate ship, hunting for treasure using a metal detector, recording secret messages for our partners to follow and find the treasure, making flags etc. etc.
Help us by cutting and sticking – many of the children are underdeveloped in their use and control of scissors.. Get a catalogue, some plain paper and a glue stick and watch them go!
Our handwriting is a key area for improvement this half term, so your support with that at home would be very much appreciated. Many of the children are forming the ‘o’ incorrectly, as they begin at the bottom and travel clockwise, which presents many problems later on. This week (and next) we are concentrating on the letters ‘a’, ‘d’ and introducing ‘g’. Please encourage your children to write these letters for you at home and insist they do so correctly, starting each of these letters at the top right, and moving anti-clockwise around the circle…Practise ‘little and often’ really works with this small but important aspect of writing. If your child will not write at home, please encourage drawing, colouring, cutting out, gluing etc – it all improves muscle control in the hands and handwriting in the long run… If you would like more advice, please let us know. Thanks for you support.

This week's newsletter - Well done to our Superstars - Millie Beck and Billy Carter
NEWS ROUND-UP
We got a VERY exciting delivery from Meanwood Valley Urban farm this week – an incubator and many eggs which we are very excited to be caring for.. We began our 21 day count down on Tuesday, and are really looking forward to seeing our fluffy friends emerge when they do. Next week, we hope to get a live webcam positioned so that we can watch the egg-action throughout the night, if we so wish..!
We have continued our Dinosaur topic this week, researching using video clips on the Espresso site. We are going into our final week of the dinosaur topic next week, but I doubt very much this will be the last we hear about dinosaurs!
BLOGSPOT
Our giant diplodocus has been painted this week….look out for him – and other news - on our new Reception blog. This is an immediate way for us to share information and our experiences with you. You can access it at http://robinhoodfoundationstage.blogspot.com/. Please do!
Numeracy We have worked with our 2D shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle, pentagon and hexagon) to copy, create and continue repeating patterns including variation in colour, shape and size. We have also introduced 3D shapes, this week printing to notice the 2D faces.
Literacy
We have shared the Dinosaur song with the children, providing lots of talking points. We have used this as a stimulus to discuss the different types of dinosaurs and how we could sort and classify them by their features (herbivores, carnivores, land, sea or flying dinosaurs etc.)
Topic
We have used our mapping skills to create an imaginary map of a dinosaur world using a key to highlight areas such as swamps, deserts, ice caps and forests. The children then programmed our robots to navigate the maps avoiding the perilous areas, giving just one set of instructions…
NEXT WEEK
We will focus on 3D shapes (cone, pyramid, cuboid, cube, sphere and cylinder) using mathematical language to describe the shapes, talking about corners, faces, sides.
Help us by:-
Find 2/3D shapes around the house or in the supermarket. Ask your child to name them, and tell you one fact that they know about them!
NEXT WEEK
We will be drawing and labelling our dinosaur puppets, practising our handwriting and phonics. We will also be working with a partner to create a TV news broadcast about the extinction of dinosaurs..
Help us by:-
Continuing to read at home – 3 or 4 times a week (whilst the books are nice and short) really does impact very quickly on your child’s reading. Remember – re-reading improves fluency and is very valuable.
NEXT WEEK
We will be exploring the theories of extinction, beginning to appreciate that we make deductions about the past based on clues that may remain.
We will be looking at the Ice age and exploring if we can ‘rescue’ our dinosaurs from blocks of ice or stop them from melting. We will predict our ideas and then record our findings from our investigations.
In the DT area we will be designing and making our very own dinosaur puppets..
Our handwriting is a key area for improvement this half term, so your support with that at home would be very much appreciated. Many of the children are forming the ‘o’ incorrectly, as they begin at the bottom and travel clockwise, which presents many problems later on. This week (and next) we are concentrating on the letters ‘o’, ‘a’ and introducing ‘d’. Please encourage your children to write these letters for you at home and insist they do so correctly, starting each of these letters at the top right, and moving anti-clockwise around the circle…Practise ‘little and often’ really works with this small but important aspect of writing, as does drawing, colouring in and cutting using scissors. If you would like more advice, please let us know… Thanks for you support.
Baking is back in Reception… This week the children created Dinosaur biscuits to share with their friends. Our thanks to Mrs Dunne for the loan of the fabulous cutters!

The Dinosaur song..
We've been up to our eyes in dinosaurs for an entire week now! We have created a HUGE diplodocus outside using modroc, we have created small ones inside using clay, we have watched video clips and are busy learning the dinosaur song - see it here www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0FOZ0-VpcU - it has been VERY popular indeed!
We are busy recording voice files to capture all the incredible facts we have collected over the past week.. We will be posting a factsheet and a video soon!
